Explanation of the Native Model of Media Literacy in the Education System of Islamic Republic of Iran Using the Grounded Theory

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to design a native model of media literacy in the education system of the Islamic Republic of Iran using grounded theory. For this purpose, twelve semi-structured interviews with experts and a separate study were conducted. Data analysis in the open coding process led to the identification of 262 abstract concepts in the form of 37 categories and nine main classes, and then these categories were related to each other in the axial coding process.
Finally, five propositions were obtained as a result of selective coding. The findings show that “requirements, factors, and resources of media literacy” through interactive, research, and educational strategies are the main factors guiding media literacy And the most important factors creating the ground in this area are: "growth of contextual discourses", "creation of a critical culture", "strengthening the spirit of learning", "improving public understanding of the media and its future", "awareness of officials of the importance of media literacy", "soft and hard infrastructures of media literacy" and "reconciliation of the elite space with the public space"; also "return of educational institutions to their original position", "improvement of public morality in the media space" and "civilizational progress" in collective outcomes and "formation of a healthy media identity", "management of media consumption", "improvement of lifestyle", "productivity and production of media content" in individual outcomes, are the most important expected outcomes of "media literacy leadership".
